Ships crossing the Red Sea |
Bloomberg Agency published a report containing statements by the head of a major oil tanker company, where he said on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, that it is “naive” to assume that commercial ships will start sailing through the Red Sea again if there is an agreement to end the war between Israel and Hamas.
Any deal would be fragile and
offers no guarantee that seafarers will be safe traveling through the region,
according to Lars Barstad, CEO of Frontline Management AS, which runs one of
the world's largest supertanker fleets.
The Houthis in Yemen have been attacking commercial ships since late last year, and intensified their attacks after American and British strikes on Houthi sites. Traffic through the region fell by about 70% compared to early December, as ships were redirected to sail thousands of miles around Africa, according to Clarkson Research, a unit of the world's largest shipbroker.
