Members of the US Congress called for scrutiny of the United States’ use of shipping containers produced by China, as China has a monopoly on the production of shipping containers. A member of the US House of Representatives included a clause in the latest defense bill calling on Congress to study “China’s monopoly on the production of shipping containers.”
The bill also calls on Congress to consider options for American purchases from countries that are not adversaries of the United States
“The United States should not rely solely on foreign adversaries for containers, which are used not only to ship consumer goods, but also sensitive defense systems,” the declaration said. “Congress must better understand our country’s dependence on foreign adversaries, like China, to produce and purchase containers.” Shipping in order to make effective policy decisions to better secure supply chains from China.”
Another provision on ocean shipping reform also called for the United States to "protect global supply chains from China's malign influence and increase fairness in markets" by studying how the Shanghai Shipping Exchange, which Johnson defines as a platform that connects shippers with carriers to enter into agreements or... Contracts to transport goods, and manipulate the market to serve China's interests.
The passage of the defense bill in the House of Representatives and Johnson's rulings that coincided with the bill's passage are just part of a series of recent actions criticizing China's growing dominance in maritime shipping.
In March 2022, Federal Maritime Commissioner Karl Bentzel issued a report investigating China's monopoly on container production. The report, which was not an official Federal Maritime Commission report but one in which Bentzel shared his personal opinions, noted that three Chinese companies make more than 95% of the world's containers, including those used in the United States.
