East Port Said Port in Egypt receives the third Maersk ships that operate on green fuel

 East Port Said Port, affiliated with the General Authority for the Suez Canal Economic Zone, received the ship Astrid Mærsk, which operates with green methanol, and the ship arrived at the dock of the Suez Canal Container Terminal and APM Terminal (SCCT/APMT).



This is on its first visit to the port, and the ship is the third to operate on green fuel among 18 ships that Maersk seeks to complete between 2024 and 2025, in accordance with the company’s commitment to supporting sustainable practices in the field of maritime transport.



Mr. Walid Gamal El Din, Chairman of the General Authority for the Suez Canal Economic Zone, stated that East Port Said Port has achieved leadership in the field of transformation towards sustainable practices in the field of maritime and logistical services.


East Port Said Port was declared in 2017 as the first green port according to European Union and international environmental standards through the use of environmentally friendly equipment during trading operations for some dry bulk goods.


It also carried out the first ship bunkering operation with green fuel (emethanol) for the ship Laura Maersk in the Eastern Mediterranean and Africa in August 2023. This confidence comes from the fact that it is one of the most important Egyptian ports that receives 80% of the total container transit trade in Egypt.



It is worth noting that East Port Said Port achieved many achievements in the field of maritime transport and container handling during the year 2023, as it received 1,563 various ships with an achieved capacity of 45.5 million tons and a number of containers of 3.71 million equivalent containers.


 In addition to being declared the port No. 10 in the world on the Ports Performance Index for the year 2022 according to the World Bank’s report issued for the year 2023, in addition to its success in providing ship bunkering services with fossil and green fuels.
